Metal Roof vs. Composition Shingles for Mountain Homes

If you are replacing a roof in Trinity or Shasta County, the two most common choices are composition (asphalt) shingles and metal roofing. Both can protect a home well. They differ in cost, lifespan and how they behave in snow and fire.

Cost

Composition shingles usually cost less up front. Metal usually costs more at the start and can cost less over its life because it lasts longer. The right answer depends on how long you plan to stay in the house.

Lifespan

Composition shingles typically last about 20 to 30 years. Metal roofs commonly last 40 years or more, depending on the product and finish. Heat, sun and snow load all affect both.

Snow

Metal's smooth surface lets snow slide off, which helps on steep mountain roofs. That sliding snow can be dangerous over doors and walkways, so metal roofs in snow country often get snow guards. Shingles hold snow longer and release it gradually.

Fire resistance

Both materials can carry a Class A fire rating when the complete roof assembly is built to qualify. Metal does not ignite from embers. What matters is the assembly and the details at vents, eaves and gutters, and your address may have specific requirements.

Appearance and color

Composition shingles offer a very wide range of colors and textures. Metal comes in many colors and profiles too, from classic standing seam to ribbed panels that suit cabins and barns.

How to decide

  • Staying 15 years or more, in snow or fire country: metal deserves a close look.
  • Working to a tighter budget, or wanting the widest choice of looks: composition is a solid choice.
  • Not sure: ask for an estimate on both and compare the numbers for your roof.

Request a free estimate and we will price both options for your roof. Estimates are free in Lewiston, Weaverville, Douglas City and Junction City. In other areas, such as Hayfork, Trinity Center and Coffee Creek, we may charge for fuel; ask us about your location.
