Clifford Building (Native Sons Hall), Weaverville: a Gold Rush landmark
About this project
The Clifford Building, also known as Native Sons Hall, dates to 1855 and stands in the heart of the Weaverville Historic District. It may be the fourth building on its site, because fires destroyed earlier ones. Today it is home to the Trinity County Information Center, where visitors and neighbors come for help and a warm welcome.
It is also a piece of California history: one of the first condominiums in the state, with each floor owned by someone different. That is why the building has its famous spiral staircase, added in 1859.
Roofing a building that has stood since the Gold Rush is nothing like roofing a house. Hinkle & Hinkle Roofing took it on right in the middle of town: opening up the old roof deck, replacing sheathing where it was needed, and finishing with a white flat roof and metal roofing built to last. For a family that has roofed Trinity County for generations, putting its work on a landmark like this one is a point of pride.
